My aspiration is to become a Nurse Practitioner
Tuesday, March 03, 2009
One of the most enjoyable aspects in nursing is the interaction between
patients and nurses and how as a team, come together to restore health and
ailment. My family is prone to diabetes; this is one of the reasons why I
take healthcare seriously. Aside from school, I make time to lift weights
and get my daily thirty minutes of cardiovascular activity. Maintaining a
healthy life is what helped me appreciate how important it is to eat a
well-balanced meal and made me aware of what my body needs and how it
reacts. I embrace nursing as an opportunity to promote and sustain health on
a higher level.
My aspiration is to become a Nurse Practitioner with an emphasis in
maternity and women’s health. During the course of my friend’s
pregnancy, we exercised together and I shared my knowledge on nutrition with
her. She was very interested in the quality of her health and her soon to be
born baby; therefore, became just as conscious of her eating habits as well
as her daily exercises. When she went into labor, she called on me for
support. Childbirth is one of the most amazing events life has to offer…to
watch the infant take in its first breath of air brought tears to my eyes.
It was this event that inspired me to pursue a career in labor and delivery
in nursing. I chose to enter the field of nursing because of the intimate
relationship between nurses and patients that advocates healing and
optimizes health.
My undergraduate career in Cell and Molecular Biology has provided me an
opportunity to become a successful research associate in the field of
molecular biology, eventually leading to a publication I contributed to in
2007 on limb development using mice models. The research industry enhanced
my knowledge in science as well as prepared me to enter graduate school.
As a nursing student, I find it important to gain insight on the policies
of healthcare and I am working in becoming an advocate by writing letters to
a local San Diego newspaper editors and elected officials which conveys my
views on health related problems. Changing the way healthcare is implemented
not only consists of an interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, physical,
occupational, and speech therapist, but also a person who is advocates
outside this individualized care plans of a patient to changing the policies
to benefit our community as a whole. Understanding policy and how it can
effect the healthcare industry is important, and not only to be aware of,
but to be active in the changing world of healthcare. Maybe one of my
articles will be published- one day!
The University of San Diego has an excellent program that is in line with
my academic views and is unfortunately one of the most expensive schools
during this time of economic grief. Being that it is a private school, I am
worried about the amount of debt I will be in by the time I graduate and
start repaying loans. With an interest rate of more than 5%, it will take
years to pay back this loan. This scholarship award would greatly help me
bring down the amount of debt I am struggling with being I am independent
and living off loans.
Waking up every morning to career I love means I will put my heart and soul
into all I do which will allow me to provide the best care to my patients. I
enjoy working with people and diagnosing problems and I plan to use my
skills in the field that I love most. Altogether, having these qualities
makes me an attribute to the growing nursing field which is in demand not
only for nurses, but nurses that can bring new ideas and a fresh feel to the
ever so changing world of medicine and healthcare.
