Interested in helping people

I wish to become a Nurse because I have always been interested in helping
people and am a natural caretaker. As a child who grew up with a struggling
single parent household, I quickly learned all of the responsibilities from
coming home alone after school and studying to cooking to cleaning. As a
student who is interested in the sciences, I applied myself and worked
throughout school balancing fulltime coursework and employment. After
graduating from the competitive University of Delaware with a B.A Degree in
Psychology, I went to work as a Counselor with severely disabled adults. As
much as I enjoyed my Psychology, I knew I wanted to work with my patients in
a more one-on-one healing manner. After much research and career counseling,
I have decided to pursue a Degree in Nursing. All along, I enjoyed the
technical and scientific aspects of a medical career and know this is right
for me! I feel that having a Bachelors Degree in Psychology can only be
beneficial for me in my new career.
I thrive when working in an intense atmosphere, and interacting directly
with people. As a returning adult student, I value the maturity,
professionalism, and advanced decision-making skills and wish to apply these
to the nursing profession. Knowing the average age of Nursing Program
graduates is increasing every year, more and more students like me are
entering the field after having pursued another career. Through
informational interviews with Nursing school administrators, I found that
they really value second-career nursing students because we bring an energy
and focus to our studies that their younger counterparts lack. Often, we
returning adults students are often top performers academically!
I understand that working in the medical field is physically demanding. I
am use to dealing with patients, being on my feet for long periods, having
to think and react in a fast paced environment. I possess strong
interpersonal and communication skills, can work independently, multi-task,
am able to prioritize and complete all assignments. I have a strong work
ethic and act in a professional manner. I am computer proficient and I
understand basic HIPAA laws and will follow the confidentiality guidelines
and regulations. As a student, I am flexible, excited for the opportunity to
learn and apply myself and have a positive attitude about my future career.
I am currently volunteering in several medical settings and am taking the
necessary pre-requisite courses. As an independent student, I do not have
any parental help or financial assistance with my education, books, campus
fees or living expenses. Your scholarship would make it possible for me to
go to school to pursue a rewarding career in Nursing helping others.
